Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don't mistake you for a bot

This is one of the first posts I've seen after trying to look at Tumblr again, so I've decided to head their advice and reblog this. I don't even know what a reblog is but I'll find out in time. It's a learning process

lyridmeteorshower

a reblog is what you just did! it's similar to a retweet on twitter and it's the main way things spread on tumblr

bobolobocus

And when reblogging, you don’t need to add text, you can just do a blank reblog.

Pinned Post or if you want you can write a message in the tags (these) And! if someone screenshots them and reblogs with an image of them we call that a successful peer-review

What I really hate about Tumblr's latest updates, and I have no idea when this happened but it was recent, is that I no longer have a comfortable place to click on a post and open it in another tab to read later. If you haven't told, I still treat this as a BLOG. I love to post long shit and I love to read long shit, I like shitposts too, but If I wanted to read three sentence takes with no nuance I would go to twxxxiter. I NEED this to at least pretend to be a blog.

Oh, but you can!

...It’s on the timestamp.

Notice that it’s opening the specific post.

I hate this website so much. Thank you.

How can we view prev tags though, Staff? How can we view prev tags?

Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me.

I know there is a lot of discourse (tm) around this right now but listen to me

sometimes you do just have to lie to children.

kaity--did

If, when my toddler is, you know, toddling around saying “mama? Big ball?”

If I were lean down and say “unfortunately the big beach ball for some reason fills you with such an unadulterated rage that is beyond human comprehension that you scream until you pass out, so mama had to remove the beach ball from the premises until you can better regulate your emotions” she would simply stare at me like I had 3 heads full of equal betrayal.

So, for now, instead “big ball went night night!”

kaity--did

Please understand when I say “removed the ball from the premises” I mean I popped it in a fit of exhausted confusion. I murdered the beach ball.

See I’ve lied to you all too and it was better this way.

Saw this a few times on the road - never got a good look at the front and finally caught it at a stop light. Was hoping you could help ID it!

1985-1987 Toyota Corolla Levin (AE86)

CORRECTION: This is a Kouki, not a Levin! I was mostly looking at the tail lights when I did this one and totally missed the pop ups up front. Thanks to the replies for correcting me!

Me: "that is such an easy ID i actually wonder if it's a joke"
The car IDing hero: gets it wrong twice*

*The car in question is a Toyota Sprinter Trueno** - Kouki, meaning "later model" in Japanese, is used to refer to later, facelifted examples (which this indeed is**)

**Or at least it looks like one - but the only visual difference between it and earlier models, and indeed between those and the Corolla Levin, are easily swapped body panels, so this could technically be any one of those with different body panels swapped onto it (this is why car enthusiasts refer to them all by AE86, the chassis code they share).

identifying-cars-in-posts

yeah i probably should’ve just said ae86, i really wanted to get the specific one since there’s so many models under one chassis code and most people assume the ae86 is just the sprinter trueno from like initial d (and people have a tendency to get a bit pedantic when i’m not specific), but it meant i bit off a bit more than i could chew trying to get the specific model. the taillights are off a kouki or maybe a levin i think, but i have a rough time with the bodies on these. it’s like the GM g bodies, they’re kinda tough to distinguish since so many parts were interchangeable.

good to have times where i just royally miss the mark like this though to remind everyone that i’m not an expert or a genius, just a casual enthusiast and some guy doing this for fun.
